Phocus®2 is an acoustic data logger system designed for widespread use in detecting and localising leakage on water distribution systems. Large areas may be rapidly assessed. Phocus?2 is a 'smart' logger which can automatically determine the presence of a leak. This enables use in either survey mode or allows permanent installation. The logger gives visual, on-site indication of leakage or can be used with sophisticated software to produce graphical and tabular results. Acoustic logging is a cost effective method of reducing leakage to very low levels. Phocus?2 allows water companies to 'focus' resources in the fight to against leakage. Operation Leak pre-location is carried out by installation of a number of Phocus®2 loggers at available fittings such as hydrants or valves. The loggers record leak noise at one-second intervals for a defined period during the night, when background noise is likely to be lower. Noise amplitude will vary due to random effects, but there will always be a consistent minimum (the critical noise level) due to any constant noise - for example, leakage. Loggers which are situated closer to a leak will record a higher critical noise level. Comparison of the recorded critical noise levels between loggers provides the necessary information to determine which loggers were closest to a leak. The leak can then be pinpointed (usually by using the leak noise correlation technique). Phocus®2 loggers can be used on any pipe material - but sound is more rapidly attenuated in plastic pipes and loggers must therefore be positioned closer together. Unique Visual Leak Indication The Phocus®2 logger uses a patented algorithm to detect the presence of leakage and to display the leakage confidence factor. It also indicates the approximate noise level. Indication is initiated by use of a special stroboscopic torch. This method provides the user with on-site knowledge of the leakage situation and which loggers to readback. The full leak noise statistical data is available within the logger. The System The Phocus®2 system consists of a number of acoustic noise loggers. A communications case is required to program and readback loggers. The case has the contact-less communications facility built into the lid. Loggers may be placed in any position and the PC software automatically identifies each logger. The case provides for communication for up to 15 loggers at the same time and the cases may be connected to build a system with any number of loggers. The case is ruggedised and waterproof. Interconnection cables and PC software complete the system. An optional single logger communicator is available for use with individual loggers. Logger Features

Phocus.sms is a variant of the successful range of Phocus ? acoustic loggers with an added remote alarm facility. It is designed for use in detecting and localising leakage on water distribution systems. Phocus.sms is a ‘smart’ logger which automatically determines the presence of a leak. The logger also gives visual indication of the leak noise strength and a leakage confidence factor. Features include
Operation Phocus.sms is an intelligent acoustic logger which detects the noise generated by a water leak. The logger samples pipeline noise at one second intervals during each of three periods (termed epochs) during the night when background acoustic noise is lowest. It carries out statistical analysis on each of the three epochs to determine the Leakage Confidence Factor. If this is high then an alarm message is transmitted via sms. The alarm message also includes the lowest leak noise amplitude measured, termed the Critical Noise Value. This value is important as a measure of how close to the leak the logger is situated. Monthly ‘health-check’ In addition to the alarm information via sms Phocus.sms also transmits a monthly ‘health-check’ report. The health-check message comprises the last one month of nightly Critical Noise Value and Leakage Confidence Factor values. This provides a record of the water network acoustic situation. It also prevents de-registration from the GSM network in the event that an alarm sms message is not generated for long periods of time. Logger characteristics
Visual indication The logger gives an on-site, visual indication of the Critical Noise Value and Leakage Confidence Factor for the most recent night. Indication is initiated by use of a special stroboscopic torch. This is also used to initiate the GSM network signal strength at time of installation to ensure satisfactory operation. |
